More About The Classes:
- We do not practice formal katas (forms) but do encourage randori
(freestyle judo sparring) to perfect fighting skills.
-
- Typically we use martial arts "games" as a fun yet
practical way of developing eye/hand coordination, speed, and power.
So we spar with sticks, staffs, shiai, bokken, and other practice
weapons.
Nihan (truly Japanese) jujutsu systems spent a lot of time
perfecting techniques that modern people would have little use for. For
example, how to defend from various attacks while sitting in the traditional
Japanese fashion on one's heels (seiza). On the other
hand firearms did not exist in Samurai days so it could be said that all
firearm defenses are modern. So we do compliment our traditional techniques
with gendai (modern) techniques whenever practical.
- Although traditional jujitsu was once the unarmed combat art of the fierce
Samurai, these days it is more popular as a form of self defense which
fosters self confidence without aggressiveness, and helps promotes
peace, harmony, and the development of ki (energy/spirit) in one's daily life.
-
- We meditate at the end of each practice!
